Supreme Court justices expressed skepticism over the legality of the tariffs against most major trading partners after lower federal courts ruled that Trump lacked the legal authority he claimed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose higher levies."You say tariffs are not taxes, but that's exactly what they are," Justice Sonia Sotomayor, one of the court's liberal members, told Solicitor General D.

John Sauer. "They're generating money from American citizens, revenue," Sotomayor said.The fixed income market is also monitoring the government shutdown — now the longest in U.S. history — for signs of a compromise between Democratic and Republican lawmakers to end the stalemate.
